Do you love sipping on fine wines while visiting new destinations around the world?

As a native New Zealander, I've explored the country's stunning wine regions. Let me share my insider knowledge to help you discover hidden gems and craft a personalized itinerary for your unforgettable New Zealand wine adventure. From world-renowned vineyards to lesser-known treasures, your dream New Zealand wine vacation starts here.

Marlborough

Marlborough is one of the South Island wine regions. This area is actually considered the best of the best wine regions in New Zealand. It’s Sauvignon Blanc put the country on the global wine map.

Many of the wineries in Marlborough offer comprehensive tours plus numerous tasting options. A couple of the top wineries in this area are Cloudy Bay and Villa Maria.

When you are not sipping on fine wines, you may find yourself hiking or kayaking through Marlborough Sounds.

Central Otago

Another South Island wine region is Central Otago. This area is the southernmost wine-producing region in the world. The wineries here produce a robust, complex Pinot Noir.

Why not try a few food and wine pairings at Central Otago’s wineries? It’s even better when you can savor the experience outdoors, surrounded by stunning mountain views.

Central Otago offers more than just world-class wines. A short trip to Queenstown opens up a world of adventure, from thrilling hikes and bungee jumps to exhilarating ski experiences.

Hawke’s Bay

I can’t leave out one of the best North Island wine regions. Hawke’s Bay has more than two hundred vineyards. All the wineries in this best wine region in New Zealand are famous for their Bordeaux style reds, as well as Chardonnay.

I recommend visiting the oldest winery in New Zealand, Mission Estate Winery. From there, you can venture over to Te Mara Estate or Craggy Range.

One of the favorite things to do in this wine region is cycling between the wineries. As you are riding along, you will see stunning views of the vineyards.

Nelson

You probably noticed that most of New Zealand's top wine regions are on the South Island. Nelson is one of them! This cozy little spot is known for its aromatic wines, especially Riesling and Pinot Gris.

If you're looking for the best wine tours in Nelson, check out Neudorf Vineyards, Moutere Hills, and Seifried Estate. But hey, if you have another winery in mind, just let me know and I'll add it to your itinerary.

And while you're in Nelson, don't miss Abel Tasman National Park. It's the perfect place to unwind between wine tastings with activities like hiking and kayaking.

Gisborne

While the South Island is a popular choice for wine lovers, don't overlook the North Island's hidden gems. Gisborne, for instance, is a great place to discover fantastic Chardonnay.

Some of the top wineries in Gisborne include Matawhero Wines, Millton Vineyards, and Bushmere Estate.

To add a cultural dimension to your trip, I can incorporate visits to places like the Tairāwhiti Museum. This region's rich Māori heritage offers unique experiences that complement your wine tour. Fun fact: Did you know that Gisborne is the first place in the world to see a new day?

Martinborough

Martinborough is another one of the best wine regions in New Zealand. This may surprise a few people since this is one of the smallest wine producers in the country.

You may find yourself drinking a lot of Pinot Noir while visiting Ata Rangi or the Palliser Estate.

Want to experience a wine and food festival like no other? Plan your trip to New Zealand to coincide with Toast Martinborough! This epic festival brings together wine, food, and music – everything you need for a good time.

One of the coolest things about this village is the chance to simply walk up to cellar doors and taste wine. If that sounds like your kind of fun, let me know and I'll add it to your itinerary.

Waipara Valley

Waipara Valley is the last on my list of the best wine regions in New Zealand. This wine region is located to the north of Christchurch. The wineries here produce high-quality Rieslings, Pinot Noirs, and Chardonnays.

I'll make sure you get a table at Pegasus Bay. They do amazing food and wine pairings, highlighting the best local flavors. Of course, there are other great restaurants in the area too. We can chat about your options as we plan your trip.

These are the best wine regions in New Zealand. While you may not have time to visit them all during your vacation in New Zealand, you should be able to check off your favorite destinations. Let’s chat, so we can discuss all your options before I start to personalize your itinerary for your wine-loving vacation.
