The Iconic Landmarks Along the Great Ocean Road Coastal Drive

• Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles are towering limestone stacks that jut out of the Southern Ocean. These stacks are photographed more than any other attraction on the Great Ocean Road coastal drive. 

This is an excellent location for watching the sunrise or sunset while on vacation in Australia. I do recommend arriving early, or later in the day, to avoid the daytime crowds. As a bonus for arriving at those times, you will see the golden hues from the sun hitting the cliffs in a magical way. 

If you do visit during the day, skip the views from the main platform. Instead, walk to the east to see everything from the secluded viewpoint. 

• Loch Ard Gorge - A Must-See Attraction on the Great Ocean Road Coastal Drive

There is no better way to learn about the tragic story of the Loch Ard Shipwreck in 1878 than to learn it firsthand during a stop at this gorge. The rock formations, dramatic cliffs, and clear water creates a picturesque stop you will never forget.

I recommend walking along the Gorge Walk. This will ensure you see the most of this gorgeous destination. 

You should also take the time to explore the Tom and Eva Lookout. The lookout offers spectacular panoramic views.

• London Arch

The London Arch used to be the London Bridge. The name changed once the bridge collapsed in 1990 and was no longer connected to the mainland. 

Don’t worry. It is still worth your time to stop to see this natural arch formation on the Great Ocean Road coastal drive. In fact, you can capture amazing pictures of this attraction if you time your visit right. Arriving at the golden hour will ensure you see the stunning contrast between the ocean and the cliffs. 

• Split Point Lighthouse in Aireys Inlet

One of the best ways to see sweeping views of Australia’s southern coastline is to stop at the Split Point Lighthouse. This is a historic lighthouse that has been featured on television shows. 

The best way to see the views is to climb to the top of the lighthouse. You will also learn a lot about maritime history when you visit this lighthouse in Australia. 

• Childers Cove

Childers Cove is one of the hidden gems on the Great Ocean Road. This cove offers a secluded beach that usually isn’t crowded. So, if you prefer private-like beaches, you may consider this one of the best beaches on the Great Ocean Road.

Charming Towns Along the Great Ocean Road

• Torquay

Torquay is known as the surfing capital of the world. One of the first things you should do when you arrive in Torquay is explore the Australian National Surfing Museum. 

Of course, don’t skip the opportunity to learn how to surf at Bells Beach. Just keep in mind that the waves at this beach in Australia are quite impressive. So, don’t get discouraged if you can’t seem to catch a wave during your vacation. 

The Rip Curl Pro Surfing competition takes place at Bells Beach every year. If you happen to be in the area when it is held, stop to watch the pros tackle the waves. 

The Surf Coast Walk is another way to explore this area of Australia. So, even if you don’t surf, Torquay is still one of the best places to stop on the Great Ocean Road. 

• Anglesea - A Popular Stop Along the Great Ocean Road

There are quite a few coastal towns along the Great Ocean Road coastal drive. It is practically impossible to stop at them all, unless you have a month-long vacation in Australia. 

One of the coastal towns I recommend stopping in is Anglesea. Visit the Anglesea Golf Club to have the chance of seeing kangaroos hopping around near the holes. 

A family-friendly place to swim can be found at the Point Roadknight stop. And you won’t regret taking the time to kayak along the Anglesea River during your time in town. 

• Lorne

I recommend trying to plan your drive along the Great Ocean Road coastal drive carefully, so you arrive in Lorne at mealtime. After all, this town has plenty of cafes to choose from when it is time to eat. 

After your meal, stop in one of the art galleries. Or walk along one of the natural trails to stretch your legs before getting back in the car. 

• Port Fairy

This historic fishing village is known for its 19th century cottages, as well as its quaint shops. When you finish purchasing a few souvenirs, head to the Griffiths Island Lighthouse. 

The walking trail there is perfect for when you need a little extra time out of the car. Plus, you may see a wallaby or two during your walk

Stunning Scenery Along the Great Ocean Road Coastal Drive

• Great Otway National Park - A Must-See Stop on the Great Ocean Road 

The Great Otway National Park is a lush rainforest in Australia. It is filled with ancient fern gullies, towering trees, and cascading waterfalls. 

I recommend wandering along the Maits Rest Rainforest Walk to see the enchanting Triplet Falls. You must walk along a 2 kilometer looped trail to reach this three-tiered waterfall in the middle of the rainforest. 

There are quite a few scenic viewpoints along the way. Plus, you will see plenty of the ancient myrtle beech and eucalyptus forests. 

Oh, and while you can’t plan for a rainstorm, it is best to see this waterfall after a storm. That is when the falls are the most powerful. 

Another waterfall in the Great Otway National Park is Hopetoun Falls. This tranquil waterfall is located within the lush rainforest. 

It is a short 1 kilometer walk to the viewing platform for this 30 meter waterfall. However, you should continue down the 200 step trail to the base. This will give you an up close view of this waterfall.

• Cape Otway Lighthouse

The oldest lighthouse on Australia’s mainland is the Cape Otway Lighthouse. I recommend visiting this must-see attraction on the Great Ocean Road between the months of May and October. That is when you will have the greatest chance of seeing migrating whales. 

• Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary

One of the best places to stop on the Great Ocean Road is the Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary. You can see lots of marine life there. 

However, I recommend hopping right into a kayak to get up close to the Australian fur seals that live at this sanctuary. Your tour guide will know exactly where the fur seals are hanging out during your visit, so you won’t miss them. 

Kennett River Koala Walk

Have you dreamed of seeing koalas in their natural habitat? Well, one of the best places to see koalas in their natural habitat is the Kennett River Koala Walk. And this walk is located along the Great Ocean Road coastal drive. 

I recommend visiting this area early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Those two times are when you will have the greatest chance of seeing the koalas in their natural habitat. 

• Point Addis Marine National Park

Point Addis Marine National Park is one of the must-see stops on the Great Ocean Road. You will find this park between the towns of Torquay and Anglesea. 

I highly recommend stopping at this national park during your Australian vacation if you love snorkeling and scuba diving. The underwater reefs here are home to octopuses, small sharks, and colorful fish. 

When you’re finished in the water, head over to the Point Addis Koorie Cultural Walk. It is an excellent place to learn about the indigenous heritage of the region.
